Are You Covered? The Supplemental Insurance You Didn’t Know You Needed

Updated: Dec 2, 2024

Is supplemental insurance right for you?

Here’s why it might be.

Are you planning surgery next year that will require a hospital stay?

Are you thinking about starting a family soon?

Do you enjoy biking, skiing, or other sports with injury risks?

Does your family history increase your chances of serious health conditions like cancer or heart disease?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, it’s time to consider the following supplemental insurance:

  • Accident

  • Critical Illness

  • Hospital Indemnity

  • Voluntary Short-Term Disability (STD)

  • Cancer

Example 1: Planning a Pregnancy?

When you deliver, you’ll likely go on short-term disability and spend some time in the hospital. Voluntary STD insurance can help cover your income while you’re out, and hospital indemnity insurance will give you extra cash for your hospital stay.

Example 2: Enjoy Risky Sports?

If you love skiing, biking, or any sport that could lead to injury, accident insurance can provide financial support if something happens, helping you avoid medical expenses from coming out of pocket.

Example 3: Family History of Serious Illness?

If cancer or heart disease runs in your family, Critical Illness insurance or Cancer insurance can provide financial relief if you’re diagnosed with a serious condition. These policies pay out lump sums that you can use to cover medical expenses or even daily living costs while you focus on recovery.

Example 4: Planning for Surgery?

If you know you’ll need surgery next year and will spend time in the hospital, Hospital Indemnity insurance can help. It provides cash payments for each day you stay in the hospital, giving you added financial security so you can focus on healing instead of unexpected bills.

If your employer offers supplemental insurance, check out the coverage that fits your needs. Check your company's benefits guide and contact your HR or Benefits department for any questions.
