Imagine this: You are about to have a one-on-one (1:1) meeting with your manager.
For many employees, this scenario is familiar but often mishandled. Most will show up unprepared, perhaps with a notepad for taking notes. How do I know this? Through my experience in HR, mentoring professionals, and conducting 1:1s.
An employee’s typical mindset?
💬 “Let’s see what they have to say this time.”
💬 “Probably another waste of time.”
💬 “I have a couple of questions, but I’ll wing it.”
Then, the meeting ends, and the same frustrations linger:
💬 “Yup, a waste of time, just as I thought.”
💬 “Nothing new, the same old talk.”
💬 “Oh no, I forgot the question I wanted to ask!”
However, many managers are just as unprepared for 1:1s as their employees. Some think:
💬 “I have bigger priorities than this meeting.”
💬 “Too overwhelmed today. Let me wrap this up quickly.”
The result? A valuable 30-minute opportunity becomes a frustrating waste of time.
What is the solution?
💡 Stop waiting for someone else to make your 1:1 valuable. Instead, take control and make it work in your favor.
Here is how you can prepare for a winning 1:1
✔️ Write down your questions. What do you need clarity on? Guidance for?
✔️ Bring challenges. Discuss roadblocks and suggest solutions.
✔️ Rehearse tough topics. Draft your words, practice them, and communicate effectively.
✔️ Anticipate questions. Be ready for what your manager might ask.
✔️ Have data ready. If you need to present updates, prepare in advance.
✔️ Discuss priorities or ask for help if you are completely swamped with work.
✔️ Want a promotion or a new project? Bring it up!
❗ Important: Keep track of agreements and use them to follow up next time.
🎯 You are the primary driver of your success. No one else will advocate for your career like YOU will. Do not waste these opportunities. By taking control of your 1:1s, you show initiative and build a stronger relationship with your manager.
