Hiring? The Most Tone-Deaf Interview Question That Always Blows My Mind.

There is one question some recruiters and hiring managers ask UNEMPLOYED candidates that leaves me speechless every time:

“Why are you looking for a job?”

🤦‍♀️

Seriously?

“Why do YOU have a job?” 🤔

If someone has been unemployed, the answer should be obvious. Yet, some candidates face this question during interviews, and honestly, it is baffling.

So, here is a SHOCKING truth for those who ask unemployed job seekers this question:

They need income to:

✔️ Buy food.

✔️ Keep a roof over their heads.

✔️ Care for their children.

✔️ Survive.

Imagine losing your job and being on the other side of the interview process. If someone asked you this same question, how would it make you feel? 😈

Job seekers do not owe anyone a perfectly polished reason for why they are trying to rebuild their lives.

Instead of asking pointless, tone-deaf questions, focus on how you can help someone in need.

✅ Understanding candidates’ skills and potential.

✅ Showing empathy for their circumstances.

✅ Contributing to someone’s career and well-being.

As recruiters and hiring managers, you have the power to contribute to someone’s survival and well-being by offering a fair opportunity.

Please, stop asking questions that add to the job seeker’s frustration and start making a real difference.
