🎯 Promised a Promotion That Never Comes? Here Is What’s Might Be Happening.

Updated: Jan 22

Lately, I have spoken to a few clients who shared the same frustration with me: despite working tirelessly, taking on overtime, covering managerial responsibilities, and going above and beyond, they are not getting the promotions they have been promised by their managers.

Their experiences have striking similarities:

💠 3+ years in the same role.

💠 Over 1.5 years of broken promises.

💠 Watching others on their team get promoted.

💠 No salary increases.

💠 And now, layoffs and financial constraints at their companies.

Still, they are holding on to hope, asking for promotions, and waiting for their managers to follow through.

🎯 Here is the reality:

If your position is not critical to the company or you are not the go-to partner for an important client, you are unlikely to be promoted in this case. I have witnessed it too many times.

Why?

Because your current role is too convenient for your manager! 🤷‍♀️

If you are the one they rely on to “keep things running smoothly”, a promotion is not in their best interest. Promoting you means losing their most reliable support. So, instead of acting, they keep you motivated with promises they do not intend to keep (not all the managers are like this though).

🎯 What’s the lesson here?

Saying “yes” to everything, working around the clock, and taking on your manager’s responsibilities will not get you ahead. Instead, it can trap you in the very role you are trying to escape.

If you are stuck in your current role:

✅ Loosen your expectations.

✅ Set a deadline for yourself for how long you will wait for a promotion.

✅ Stop overcommitting and redirect that energy into your career development, like building new skills, networking, or updating your resume.

✅ Explore opportunities to grow elsewhere.

Take control over your career and do not settle for empty promises.
