Video interviews are here to stay, and while they might feel less formal than in-person interviews, they require just as much preparation, if not more.
Here are 10 common mistakes that could hurt your chances and tips to avoid them:
✔️ Skipping the tech check. Test your camera, microphone, and internet in advance. Make sure the camera is at eye level (not below).
✔️ Being late due to technical issues. Log in 7-10 minutes early to troubleshoot and show punctuality.
✔️ Sitting in a cluttered or noisy space. Choose a clean, quiet, professional space. If using a virtual background, keep it neutral and distraction-free.
✔️ Dressing too casually. Dress professionally (think blouse/shirt + jacket). Yes, even for video interviews!
✔️ Looking at yourself instead of the camera. Maintain “eye contact” by often looking at the camera (not your reflection) when you answer questions. Not staring.
✔️ Allowing interruptions. Switch your phone to a “do not disturb” mode. Remind your household about the interview time and close yourself in a quiet room.
✔️ Neglecting body language. Avoid fidgeting or appearing disengaged. Sit up straight, smile, and use natural hand gestures.
✔️ Treating it as a one-sided Q&A session. Prepare thoughtful questions you will ask at the end of the interview to show your interest in the opportunity.
✔️ Underestimating small details like forgetting to clean your webcam or using poor lighting.
✔️ Not having notes. Keep key points and questions on a notepad (off-camera!) for a quick reference. At the beginning of the call, let the interviewer know that you might be glancing at your notes to ensure you will not miss everything you want to say.
🎯 Treat video interviews like in-person interviews. Do not let the virtual format fool you into being less prepared or engaged.
