Cold Applications vs. Networking: What Gets You Hired?

Job Seeker: I can’t find a job! It’s been months, and I hardly get any interviews!

Me: How many applications do you submit each week?

Job Seeker: Not sure… maybe 5–10…or 20?…

Me: SMH.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to job searching. When it comes to job hunting, there is no universal formula for success. You never know when an offer might be just around the corner.

To increase your chances, you should use ALL the tools and strategies available until one of them eventually works.

In today’s competitive job market, we often hear the same advice: “Networking is key!” Strategies like reaching out to recruiters, leveraging referrals, and connecting directly with hiring managers dominate the conversations around job searching. While these methods can be highly effective, here’s a kind reminder: Job searching is STILL a numbers game.

Yes, you read that right. Even today.

Cold applications still work.

I have seen individuals secure interviews week after week simply by consistently applying for roles.

The stats have not changed:

• For every 100 applications, you are likely to hear back from 2 to 5 companies inviting you to interview.

• The more resumes you send, the greater your chances of landing interviews.

This strategy works but only if your resume is clean, compelling, and ATS-friendly to stand out in a sea of applicants. If yours is ready, cold applications can drive surprisingly strong results.

While networking is powerful, do not underestimate the value of volume.

The more you put yourself out there, the better your odds of success.

Combine strategies for the best results.
